The tallest animal in the world is the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis). These remarkable creatures can reach heights of up to 18 feet (5.5 meters), with their long necks being a key characteristic. A male giraffe can typically stand between 16 to 18 feet tall, while females are usually slightly shorter, averaging around 14 to 16 feet. The giraffe's long neck contains the same number of cervical vertebrae as a human neck—seven—however, each vertebra is elongated, allowing for their extraordinary height.
Giraffes are primarily found in the savannahs and open woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa, where their height provides them with a significant advantage. This towering stature enables them to reach high leaves and fruits on trees that most other herbivores cannot access, including acacia leaves, which are a staple of their diet.
